The Canadian Film Fest (CFF), in collaboration with the Firecracker Department, has launched the Comedy Igniter Challenge, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at empowering female and non-binary Canadian filmmakers. This challenge pushes participants to create a comedic short film within a tight four-week window, starting from a unique prompt provided by a renowned comedy artist. With the support of both organizations, participants develop, produce, and showcase their short films, bringing fresh and diverse perspectives to the comedy genre.
The Firecracker Department, an international community dedicated to amplifying underrepresented voices in the entertainment industry, plays a pivotal role in this initiative by providing mentorship, resources, and exposure to the filmmakers.
Ashli Agate, Producer
Uju Umeny, Director
Shanice Bowrin, Writer
One of the standout teams in this year’s Comedy Igniter Challenge includes:
Ashli Agate (Producer) – A rising talent in film production, Ashli is currently part of the prestigious OYA Black Arts Career Bridge Program. She has been accepted into Phase 2 of the program, where she was awarded $10,000 to develop a proof of concept for her TV series, Nuns of Gabriel.
Uju Umenyi (Director) – A writer and director making waves in stage and screen storytelling, Uju previously collaborated with Theatre on the Ridge to develop a play about Samuel Stout, Port Perry’s first Black resident.
Shanice Bowrin (Writer) – A Montreal-born actor and storyteller, Shanice has showcased her talent across theater, film, television, and voice acting. She gained acclaim for her role in the award-winning short The Absurdity of the Black Female Experience and appeared in the chilling TV series Haunted Hospitals.
Their submission for the Comedy Igniter Challenge, Check, Please!, is a witty and fast-paced comedy that explores the awkward and absurd aftermath of a throuple breakup.
The story follows Persia Smith, who unexpectedly finds herself at brunch with her ex, Jessica, and Jessica's new fiancé. What starts as a casual reunion quickly turns into a chaotic and comedic rollercoaster of unresolved feelings, jealousy, and surprise revelations. Determined to prove she’s moved on, Persia brings an overly charismatic dance instructor as her date—only to be blindsided by Jessica’s engagement announcement.
However, Persia isn’t one to back down from a dramatic moment. In an unexpected turn, she pulls out a childhood keepsake, professes her lingering love, and asks Jessica to run away with her. To the shock of everyone—including Jessica’s fiancé—Jessica accepts, leaving her man bewildered as she and Persia flee hand in hand.
With its sharp dialogue, over-the-top comedic moments, and a playful take on modern relationships, Check, Please! perfectly embodies the spirit of the Comedy Igniter Challenge.
